In a world where the sound of society needs to be recorded, mixed and mastered, one has many options to go about performing the task, and when I say many, I mean 2. While some audio engineers prefer the industry standard Avid’s Pro Tools, there are those that suggest Apple’s Logic Pro. I’m here to pledge my allegiance to Logic Pro. Now, before you start burning my jersey (What’s up, Matt Schaub?), let me explain.
For one, the visual aspect of Logic is far easier to look at than Pro Tools. Think of Pro Tools as that cute girl in school that wears too much make-up. You know damn well she wouldn’t be as cute without it (looking like a coloring book with legs). Now think of Logic as that girl with the natural beauty. No make-up, no weave, and most importantly, no ass injections. Think of a younger Sade. Logic’s design stays with a monotone color scheme, which makes it easier for me to locate functions as opposed to Pro Tools’ “jello shots” all over the screen making my eyes bleed.
Next, it’s the VST plugins, which shouldn’t matter if you know how to install a Waves bundle in either program. All of Logic’s VST’s have similar looks, which once again makes it simpler on the engineer to maneuver. Meanwhile, Pro Tools’ reverbs and delay effects look like distant relatives that didn’t know they were related and…. well, you can kind of tell where I’m going with this.
Lastly, Logic has a formula and STICKS WITH IT. They know not to add/remove too much in order to keep the engineers happy. The ability to use a variety of audio interfaces, the ability to open those old Garage Band files and a heap of other possibilities shadow over Pro Tools’ lack of flexibility and overly constant change. Take Pro Tools 10 for example. You have an M-Box? Now you need an iLok. Remember that old .ptf file? Well, you can’t open it because Pro Tools 10 only takes .ptx files. As Jules from Pulp Fiction once said, "It's shit like this that's going to bring this situation to a head!"
With all that said, I am by no means trying to force those Pro Tools users out there to convert to Logic. If you’re comfortable with the system, stand by what works for you. I just honestly feel Logic is more mature and to-the-point, especially when it comes to project deadlines (We’ve all been there). Speaking of Pro Tools, the good folks here at Green Studio NYC is current holding tutoring lessons for both Pro Tools and Logic Pro. Did I write all this for a shameless plug? Perhaps.
