So, I’m sitting down watching on of my favorite childhood movies, Mortal Kombat (based on the violent-friendly video game series) and I noticed something that did not draw my attention when I watched it previous times.
In the film, the main protagonist is Liu Kang, who is a descendant of Kung Lao, who won the tournament ages ago. He, in many ways, is perceived to be the “Chosen one” to win the tournament and protect Earth from Shao Khan, who wants to merge both Earth and Outworld. Now besides Liu, you have Johnny Cage, the successful Hollywood action star, who gets a bad rap for being seen as a fraud in the eyes of many tabloids. In order to remove all claims from the public eye, he enters the tournament. Many believe that out of the two, Liu Kang is stronger than Johnny Cage, but I think otherwise and here’s why:
Cage v
Scorpion
Notice in the fight, Cage is
isolated in the forest to fight Scorpion, whose famous catchphrase
“GET OVER HERE!!!” is used by many pimps in the United States. He
is then transported to an abandoned hell-like surrounding, which
suits Scorpion and thus giving him the advantage to win…Right?
Well, Johnny Cage uses the shield and spear to pull off an
upset.
Cage v Goro
Next, there’s Goro, who’s been undefeated for more than 500 years, which is the same number he can count with his 4 hands. So how can a movie star beat an immovable object as such? Punching him in the nuts, that’s how. Johnny Cage uses hit wits to outsmart the Prince of Outworld and does it without and outer interferences. Ironically, if it were boxing, he’d be disqualified.
Kang v Sub-Zero
Not only does Chosen One get the proper equipment on the battlefield (Complements of Raiden), but in the midst of defeat by the Frozen One, Katana decides to spring up and gives Kang the old hintity-hint hint to use the water and defeat Sub-Zero.
Kang v Shang Tsung
And finally, the main event: Kang v Shang Tsung. In this case, I do give Liu credit for accepting his destiny, challenging and defeating Tsung and winning the tournament in the process, but once again, with the help of Katana, he is able to conquer whatever Tsung throws at him.
Now, I expect many to disagree with my claim that Cage is better than Kang, which is debatable. In many ways, Liu is better, but I feel he also had advantages to defeat his opponents that Cage did not, therefore leaving him to wing it and devise strategies before engaging battle. Also, Liu Kang winning the tournament did not stop Shao Kahn from merging worlds, so doesn’t this count as a loss anyway?
